Anatomical Structure of Hair
The hair shaft is the part of the hair not anchored to the follicle, and much of this is exposed at the skin’s surface. The rest of the hair, which is anchored in the follicle, lies below the surface of the skin and is referred to as the hair root.
Basically hair roots; It consists of two parts, the shaft and the follicle.
Hair shaft: The main features of this part are:
- Visible part of hair
- İnanimate, keratinized part
- The hair bulb at the bottom of the hair follicle makes it grow.
Hair follicle:
- It is the living part of the hair root.
- Found in dermis and epidermis
- Responsible for hair growth
- Attaches the body of the hair to the skin
When performing hair transplantation, the root, body and surrounding tissue of the hair must be transported together.
Each hair follicle is attached to a tiny muscle (arrector pili) that can make the hair stand up. Many nerves end at the hair follicle too. These nerves sense hair movement and are sensitive to even the slightest draft.
