Grafts Calculation/How Many Grafts Do I Need?: First and foremost, we should clarify that the term “graft” does not refer to a hair follicle. Many of our patients confuse the terms hair follicle and graft. Graft refers to a piece of tissue that will be transplanted. The hair graft is a piece of tissue that contains the hair follicles.
A graft should contain at least one hair follicle; people with dense and thick hair may have 4-5 hair follicles in a graft. A graft typically contains 1-3 hair follicles. For example, we transplanted 3500-10500 hair follicles to a patient who had 3500 grafts transplanted.
An experienced doctor should determine how many grafts the person requires prior to the operation, and the donor area where the grafts will be taken should be marked.

The number of grafts required varies depending on the size of the area to be transplanted; however, it also varies depending on the person’s age, gender, anatomical structure, scalp structure, and the number of hair follicles contained in the graft tissue.

For Norwood 4-5/Vertex, Norwood 6 and Norwood 7 level spills, a second session is required because a single session is insufficient. We recommend a second planting session at least 6 months after the first, and preferably 9-12 months later.
Normally, there are 70-100 hair follicles per square centimetre of scalp. This equates to approximately 35-50 grafts. However, 15-25 grafts per square centimetre will suffice for a satisfactory result.

Despite Turkey’s popularity in hair transplantation, we occasionally see applications that are far from quality and scientific. In social media advertisements, we see operations where the number of grafts is exaggerated.
Taking out 7000-10000 grafts in one session has nothing to do with science or human health. Grafts are living tissue fragments. Increasing the number of grafts lengthens the operation and causes the grafts to be transplanted to remain in solution for longer. In this case, the graft quality will suffer as a result.
Furthermore, taking a large number of grafts may cause donor area damage, as well as not getting enough grafts in the donor area when a second session of hair transplantation is required later in life.
